Collecting Home - background information

The project takes as an inspiration and a starting point the story of Richard and Henry Cuming who collected objects from around the world from their ‘armchairs’, without ever leaving Southwark. Their collection resulted in the Cuming Museum, which at a time of the Collecting Home project resided in a ethnically diverse part of London, Walworth.

We also engaged with a wide range of local groups in very different ways: reminiscence sessions, artist conversations, school workshops, storytelling procession through the local area. Many of these groups created their own new work inspired by the idea of home and objects, all of which was showcased in the museum throughout our residency.
